Tankless Water Heaters – Pros & Cons

Here is how a tankless water heaters work. When you turn on your hot water tap the cold water goes into the heater and , in doing so , activates the heating elements (if it’s electric) or the burners.(If you use gas)

The water is then heated as it passes through the coils or heat exchanger to heat all the hot water you need. It only takes a couple of seconds for this to happen, usually a lot less time than it usually takes when you turn on your hot water tap now.

As the flow varies your system will adjust, the faster the water flow required the more energy you will use.

When you shut ff the tap, the heater stops working, which makes it very efficient.

If you're looking to purchase a tankless water heater, here are some of the pros and cons you may wish to consider.

Some Pros:

  • The provincial government has some rebate programs from time to time, so it’s always a good thing to check. Your contractor should be up to date on anything that may be available.
  • You won’t run out of hot water.
  • Tankless heaters usually last a lot longer. Usually four to ten years longer than your ordinary tank heater.
  • These heaters are much more efficient because you only heat the water you use. There is no standby heat loss.
  • A tankless water heater takes up a lot less space and they can even be installed on walls or outdoors. (With an anti-freeze kit.) Small units can be installed almost anywhere.
  • You can save on your water heating bill as much as 15-20 percent.
  • When you use an electric model your are not harming the environment because they don't produce greenhouse gases.
  • There's zero chance of flooding because of a faulty water tank.

Drawbacks:

  • The initial cost is higher than a tank water heater.
  • Always ask the contractor what additional expenses there may be to upgrade your present gas or electric to accommodate the heater and work that into the equation when making your decision.
